Homecoming
家族 (Kazoku/ Family)
The inspiration behind these two rice bowls was family.
Rice played a significant role in my upbringing and reminded me of my grandmother who always taught us to treasure each other no matter how hard things get.
滝 (Taki/ Waterfall; Cascade)
I was going through a difficult period while thinking of what to create for this showcase. I challenged myself to make a piece that would signify the “overflowing”of emotions by adding stalks of dried flowers pouring out from a tiny bottleneck.
I wanted to express a cascade memories, the ebb and flow of day-to-day motions through free-styling. Hand-painted slip and a splash of midnight blue glaze contrasting transparent glossiness gave new life to the fired and finished piece.
夢の中 (Yume no Chi/ Head in the Clouds)
I was sometimes described as a child who had her head in the clouds, painting, drawing, singing and wanting to be everything, everywhere, all at once.
My inner child continues to find comfort in expressing itself through art, and clay just happens to be another medium I've fallen in love with, like a dream come true.
天空の城ラピュタ
(Tenkū no Shiro Rapyuta/ “Laputa: Castle in the Sky”)
Studio Ghibli was a huge part of my childhood.
The 1986 film, Laputa: Castle in the Sky continues to be a classic and favourite of mine.
Inspired by the magical floating island, this vase was created through hand-built coils and my first time experimenting with marbling by adding dashes of iron and turquoise coloured stains to fine-white stoneware.
